The UN Environmental Assembly adopted a Resolution earlier 2022 to begin negotiating an international legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution with the aim of addressing the full lifecycle of plastic including production, design and disposal. Given that cigarette filters, which are made of a type of plastic, are one of the most littered items on coastlines as cigarette butts and the impact of disposable plastic associated with new nicotine delivery devices, it is critical that this upcoming treaty address cigarette filters and tobacco plastics. The first round of negotiations will begin in the latter half of 2022 with an aim to finalize the treaty by 2024 through several rounds of negotiations.
